Modern Cookery by Lydia Chatterton 1943

What a super book! This includes details of what to keep in your storecupboard or larder, what utensils you might needs and how to choose produce at the market. So useful to the young housewife in 1943 .... and what is very interesting is that much of the information is still relevant today. We still need the same number of wooden spoons, measuring jugs and saucepans in our first kitchen (including a coffee percolator!), although we may not all need a vegetable press (I remember my mother using a wooden press to get the water out of the cabbage before serving it).

Sadly the illustrations are few and far between, and only in black and white, but at least they are photographs, not drawings.

The book was written mid-way through the Second World War (1939-1945) and yet is full of interesting ideas and recipes.

It begins with a list of store cupboard ingredients that the home cook will need and an equally useful list of utensils.

This is a picture of a modern gas kitchen - modern in 1943, that is!

More recognisable is the modern electric kitchen, alhtough it is still a million miles away from current-day trends.

Do call back when I've tried some of the recipes.
